The Pittsburgh Penguins will be the Boston Bruins’ opponent at the Discover NHL Winter Classic 2023 at Fenway Park in Boston on the 2nd of January.
Fenway Park was announced as the venue, as well as Bruins were announced as the venue and Bruins as the host team to the 2023 Winter Classic during NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman’s press event at the 2022 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas on February 4. The Winter Classic was previously played at Fenway Park on January 1 2010 when the Bruins beat Philadelphia Flyers 2-1. Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in overtime.
The Penguins are currently playing in their 3rd Winter Classic and sixth NHL outdoor game. In this year’s NHL Stadium Series, they were defeated 4-3 in overtime against Flyers in overtime. Flyers in the 23rd of February, 2019, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The 2017 Stadium Series, they defeated the Flyers 4-2 on February 25 in 2017 on Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. The 2014 Stadium Series, they lost 5-1 to the Chicago Blackhawks on March 1 on the 1st of March, 2013 at Soldier Field in Chicago, and then lost 3-1 to the Washington Capitals on January 1 in 2011 in the Winter Classic at Heinz Field.
Pittsburgh defeats The Buffalo Sabers 2-1 after a penalty shootout on January 1st in 2008 . The game was played at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York in the first Winter Classic.
The Bruins are playing their fifth NHL outdoor game as well as they are playing their 4th Winter Classic. In their 2016 Winter Classic at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, they lost 5-1 to the Montreal Canadiens on January 1 the 1st of January, 2016. The 2019. Winter Classic at Notre Dame Stadium on January 1st, 2019 they beat the Blackhawks 4-2. At NHL Outdoors 2021 at Lake Tahoe at the Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Stateline, Nevada on February 21 2021, they triumphed over The Flyers 7-3.
2023 Winter Classic will be the 36th NHL outdoor game since the Heritage Classic at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium on the 22nd of November 2003 in which the Canadiens beat Edmonton’s Edmonton Oilers 4-3.
