The Carolina Hurricanes expect all of their unsigned players Jerseys to be available to other teams when free agency begins on Wednesday. Forwards Nino Niederreiter, Vincent Trocheck, Max Domi and Derek Stepan and defensemen Ian Cole and Brendan Smith could become unrestricted free agent jerseys (UFA) at that deadline.

“I think they’re all going to go into the open jerseys market and look around. They obviously have the right to do that,” general manager Don Waddell said. He said he has had several conversations with potential UFAs. He said they all signaled to him from the beginning of the process that they wanted to test the market value of their jerseys. Waddell put the odds at 50:50 that if the six players do not sign contracts with the Hurricanes by Wednesday, they will continue to play for Carolina.

The GM shared that if the Hurricanes lose one, if not all, of their UFAs, they will certainly be active in the player market.” Then we will definitely spend the money in one way or another. But in strengthening our team, we want to be smart,” he stressed.
